What is the difference between CSU/DSU devices? Why do we need to connect to CSU devices before connecting to serial WAN? What is the difference between DTE and DCE cable?

I am studying leased line cabling basics. I came across this topic and I am confised about it.
DSL and cable modems are CSU/DSUs because they convert from one type of digital signal to another. A CSU/DSU is the equivalent of the modem for an entire LAN.
Lets say your router have a serial port and ISP is providing you a lease line , lease line will be optical fiber where as router is having serial port , so u need a in between device to perform such signal conversion functions.
