Internet of things is a concept of next level of connectivity.
The model of connectivity we have right now is client server or peer to peer. i.e we have atleast one active participant who seek something from someone but in iot things will be different .
sensors will be applied to things and their data will be collected at a central network . for eg cars will be monitored to better understand the traffic flow and what are the busy hours or how to manage traffic at peak.
the above example is just a glimps of iot.
there are many challenges like sensor's energy source , network connectivity , confidentiality , addressing schema etc. but for sure iot is there and its devloping very fast
