A virtual local area network (VLAN) is a logical group of workstations, servers and network devices that appear to be on the same LAN despite their geographical distribution. The purpose of implementing a VLAN is to improve the performance of a network or apply appropriate security features.

VLANs define broadcast domains in a Layer 2 network. A switched environment offers the technology to overcome flat network limitations. Switched networks can be subdivided into virtual networks (into different broadcast domains). The VLAN configuration is stored in the vlan.dat file, which is stored in nonvolatile memory.
