Loopback under physical interface ?

Please explain in detail about the loopback under an interface..what purpose does it solve after setting it ? I have highlighted it below.
R1#sh int s1/1
Serial1/1 is administratively down, line protocol is down
Hardware is M4T
MTU 1500 bytes, BW 1544 Kbit/sec, DLY 20000 usec,
reliability 255/255, txload 1/255, rxload 1/255
Encapsulation HDLC, crc 16, loopback not set

It is used to perform loopback diagnostic on serial interfaces in case of ATM.
As we are not using this technology anymore you need not worry about this.
