First of all you need to identify your area of interest. If you want to develop your expertise in Cisco Routing & Switching technologies, then you should definitely go for CCNP R&S Certification Training. But if you want to establish your career in Network Security domain. I will not recommend you to go for CCNA Security Cert only.

CCNA Security just cover basics of Cisco Security technologies. You better do CCNA Security + CCNP Security both, if you really want to learn something practically. CCNP Security covers a lot of practical stuff. You learn how to configure Cisco Firewalls, IPS Systems, IronPorts and VPN technologies. All these devices and technologies are in great demand right now.

But now if you ask weather to go for CCNP R&S or CCNA Security + CCNP Security combo? I would definitely recommend you to choose Cisco CCNP R&S instead of CCNA + CCNP Security. There's a solid reason behind that.

As per Cisco's Certification chart, you don't need to have CCNP R&S in order to go for Cisco Security certifications track. But if you look at today's real industry scenario, you definitely need to have good Routing & Switching skills. Even during your CCNP Security journey, you will need to configure BGP which is cover in CCNP R&S, not CCNA alone.

Most of the companies prefer to hire Network Security Engineers with good knowledge of Routing & Switching technologies. Although not all companies look for this kind of skill set, but majority does.

If you are interested in security, you can go for CCNA(Sec). If you are interested in R&S, you can go for CCNP(R&S).
